Iris haynei

Iris haynei is a distinguished herbaceous perennial belonging to the Iridaceae family. As a prominent member of the oncocyclus iris group, it is celebrated for its exceptionally large, complex flowers that exhibit intricate veining patterns and deep, velvet-like textures on the falls.

The species is endemic to a restricted range in the northern regions of Israel, specifically the Gilboa Mountains. It has evolved to thrive in dry, rocky slope environments, characterized by a Mediterranean climate with distinct, wet winters and long, arid summers, which trigger the plant's dormant phase.

Botanically, the plant features a rhizomatous structure and glaucous, linear leaves arranged in a fan-like manner. The blooms typically appear in early spring, often solitary, displaying a striking palette ranging from violet to reddish-brown, which makes it a highly prized specimen for specialized botanical collections.
