Botanically, the plant is characterized by a fleshy rhizome system from which sword-shaped leaves and tall, elegant flower stalks emerge. The structure of the flower is complex, typically consisting of three inner petals known as 'standards' and three outer ones called 'falls'. Depending on the cultivar, these flowers can vary significantly in shape, size, and blooming time, making them a versatile crop for various horticultural purposes.

Successful cultivation requires well-drained, fertile soil with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to neutral. Irises are heliophilic, meaning they thrive in full sun exposure. Poor drainage is the most significant agronomic risk, as it often leads to root rot. Optimal management practices involve keeping the rhizomes slightly exposed to sunlight during planting, ensuring appropriate spacing to facilitate air circulation, and maintaining weed-free soil to minimize competition for nutrients.

Beyond their role in landscape architecture and the cut-flower industry, certain iris cultivars are economically significant in the perfumery sector, where their rhizomes are harvested to extract essential oils. Agronomists focus on consistent irrigation during the budding phase and the application of balanced phosphorus-potassium fertilizers to promote vigorous blooming and root health. Regular thinning and replanting every few years are essential to maintain plant vitality.

The most common health issues for Iris hybrids include bacterial soft rot, leaf spot diseases (such as Heterosporium iridis), and various fungal blights. Pests such as iris borers, aphids, and thrips can also cause significant damage if left unmanaged.
