Iris lortetii

Iris lortetii is a rare and highly decorative perennial plant belonging to the Iridaceae family. Known as one of the most beautiful species within the Oncocyclus group, it is characterized by exceptionally large, intricately patterned flowers. Due to its specific biological needs, it is considered a premium species for expert gardeners and botanical collections.

The plant originates from the rocky mountainous regions of Lebanon and northern Israel. Living in high-altitude habitats with distinct seasonal variations, the plant has evolved a specialized root system capable of enduring periods of severe drought followed by limited moisture in the growing season. This evolutionary background dictates its strict requirements for drainage.

Botanically, the species features robust rhizomes and sword-shaped leaves of a glaucous color. The flowers are the primary attraction, displaying broad segments with a white or cream background, heavily veined and stippled in shades of pink, violet, or deep red. The central signal patch on the falls is a distinctive hallmark of this species.

Cultivation requires strict adherence to specific agro-technical standards. Successful growth depends on full sun exposure and a well-drained, alkaline-based soil mixture containing stone chippings or gravel. The most critical factor is providing a dry summer dormancy period; excessive moisture during this time is fatal to the rhizomes and usually leads to rot.
