The Snake's head iris, botanically classified as Iris tuberosa or Hermodactylus tuberosus, belongs to the Iridaceae family. This perennial crop is widely recognized by its unique tuberous roots, which distinguish it from the standard rhizomatous iris species. These tubers serve as vital storage organs that support the plant during its distinct growth and dormancy cycles.

Originating from the Mediterranean region, this species has adapted to environments with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. In agricultural and horticultural practices, it is typically cultivated in regions that mimic its natural habitat. It thrives in open, sunny locations where the soil warms up quickly in early spring, facilitating its early flowering stage.
