Italian Jasmine

Italian Jasmine (Jasminum humile L.) is a robust, evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub belonging to the family Oleaceae. Unlike many other jasmine varieties that are climbers, this species typically maintains a more erect, shrubby habit, reaching heights of 1.5 to 2 meters under optimal conditions.

The plant originates from the mountainous regions of Asia, specifically extending through Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Western China. It has been widely introduced to botanical gardens and private landscapes globally due to its elegant growth and the high concentration of fragrance in its flowers.

Botanically, it features alternate, odd-pinnate leaves with 3 to 7 leaflets and bright yellow flowers that bloom in terminal clusters. Its blooming season spans from late spring through mid-summer, providing a significant ornamental value to garden borders and container plantings.

Cultural requirements involve full sun exposure and well-drained, fertile soil. While it shows good drought tolerance once established, it thrives best with consistent moisture during the growing season. In terms of maintenance, pruning should be performed immediately after flowering to stimulate new growth for the following season.

The species is primarily utilized for ornamental landscaping and in the fragrance industry for its highly aromatic essential oils.
