In agricultural practice, this plant is primarily identified as a troublesome weed that colonizes damp grassland habitats, competing with desirable forage species and posing a significant health risk to grazing animals.
Native to Europe, this species is widely distributed across temperate regions. It thrives in high-moisture environments, typically found on wetlands, low-lying pastures, riverbanks, and marshy meadows. Its presence is often indicative of poor soil drainage or excessive soil compaction in grassland ecosystems.
The plant features a stout, branched stem reaching heights of up to 120 cm. Its leaves are distinctively lyrate-pinnatifid, and the golden-yellow flower heads are arranged in loose corymbs. The plant completes its life cycle by producing wind-dispersed seeds, which possess a high rate of germination, enabling it to spread rapidly across disturbed or overgrazed wet soils.
