Description
Java fern, scientifically classified as Colysis pteropus (previously Microsorum pteropus), is a perennial aquatic fern belonging to the Polypodiaceae family. It is a highly resilient species, widely cultivated for its aesthetic and biological utility in controlled aquatic environments across the globe.
The plant originates from Southeast Asia, where it is found in the wild across regions like India, Thailand, and the Philippines. Its natural habitat includes rocky stream banks and riverbeds, where it thrives in conditions characterized by high moisture and constant water flow, attaching itself firmly to stones and driftwood.
Botanically, Java fern is distinguished by its rhizomatous structure and leathery, lance-shaped leaves. Unlike many terrestrial plants, it does not possess a true root system intended for soil anchoring. Instead, its roots serve primarily as holdfasts, allowing the fern to anchor to solid objects while leaves absorb nutrients from the water column.
Regarding agronomic requirements, this crop thrives in temperatures between 20 °C and 28 °C. It is tolerant of a wide range of light levels, though extreme direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent algae overgrowth. Water quality is critical; the plant prefers well-circulated, nutrient-stable environments and is susceptible to damage in water with high salinity or rapid chemical shifts.
In terms of хозяйственного (economic) use, Java fern is a staple in the commercial aquarium plant trade. It serves as an essential bio-filter component and a habitat for aquatic fauna. While the plant is notably resistant to most pests due to its bitter-tasting leaves, it may suffer from rhizome rot if buried too deeply in substrate or if water circulation is insufficient, leading to localized plant decay.
