Jostaberry

Jostaberry (Ribes x culverwellii) is a unique interspecific hybrid resulting from the crossbreeding of blackcurrant and gooseberry. Belonging to the Grossulariaceae family, this hardy shrub is renowned for being thornless, which distinguishes it from the gooseberry parent and makes harvesting much more efficient. The bush is vigorous, typically reaching 1.5 to 2 meters in height, with a dense habit of deep green foliage.

Developed in Germany during the 1970s, the jostaberry was designed to combine the disease resistance and aromatic qualities of the blackcurrant with the size and vigor of the gooseberry. It has since become a popular choice for gardeners in temperate climates across Europe and North America due to its robust nature and adaptability to various soil conditions.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its fast growth rate and ability to produce heavy crops of dark, glossy, vitamin-rich berries. The fruit is generally larger than a blackcurrant, with a unique sweet-tart flavor profile that matures over the mid-summer season. The plant also displays an attractive structural form, often used as a feature shrub or as part of a productive hedge.

Cultural requirements for jostaberry include a sunny, sheltered location with nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. It thrives best when mulch is applied to retain soil moisture, and regular pruning is essential to remove older, less productive wood and encourage airflow throughout the canopy. Because of its vigorous nature, spacing between individual plants should be at least 1.5 to 2 meters.

The culinary versatility of the jostaberry is high, making it ideal for jellies, jams, pies, and fresh consumption. Regarding plant health, it is noted for its superior resistance to many common berry diseases like powdery mildew and currant leaf spot, significantly reducing the need for chemical intervention. Regular monitoring for common garden pests like aphids is generally sufficient for maintaining plant health.
