Koidzumi rush (Juncus koidzumii) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Juncaceae family. Known for its distinct growth habit, this plant is primarily found in wetland ecosystems where soil moisture remains high throughout the growing season.

The species is native to East Asia, with a primary distribution in Japan. It thrives in temperate regions characterized by significant precipitation and high humidity levels. Its natural habitats typically include marshes, edges of ponds, and damp meadows where other grasses struggle due to constant water saturation.

Botanically, Juncus koidzumii is recognized by its upright, cylindrical stems that provide a clean, architectural appearance. The leaves are largely reduced to basal sheaths, directing the plant's photosynthetic activity primarily to the stems. Its flowers are small and clustered, eventually producing capsules filled with seeds that facilitate natural propagation.

Cultivation requirements are strict regarding moisture; the plant must be kept in consistently wet or damp soil to thrive. It performs best in full sun, although partial shade is acceptable in warmer climates. The soil should be slightly acidic to neutral, and the plant is remarkably tolerant of shallow standing water, making it a robust choice for water features.

In landscaping, it is highly valued for its ability to soften the hard edges of garden ponds and for use in rain gardens. It serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, such as stabilizing pond margins. While generally pest-resistant, growers should monitor for common root rot if the water becomes stagnant and oxygen-depleted in very tight, heavy soils.
