Round-fruited rush (Juncus sphaerocarpus) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Juncaceae family. Unlike some larger members of this family, it is a compact species characterized by its high plasticity in water-logged environments that may face seasonal drought, which makes it a unique botanical specimen for researchers and agronomists.

The origin of this species is spread across Europe, the Caucasus, and parts of Central Asia. Its natural habitat includes the margins of temporary ponds, moist meadows, and areas where water tables fluctuate significantly throughout the year. It has adapted to thrive in temperate climates where light competition is minimized in open, wet areas.

Botanically, it is a small plant that rarely exceeds 15 centimeters in height. It features thin, hair-like leaves and stems. The most distinctive feature is the spherical seed capsules that give the plant its scientific name. These capsules contain numerous tiny seeds, ensuring the plant's survival through annual reseeding in unpredictable environments.

Regarding climate and soil, the round-fruited rush requires sufficient moisture during the germination and growth phases. It typically does not demand highly fertile soils but does require open, sunlight-rich environments. In terms of agronomic practice, it is rarely cultivated as a primary crop; however, its management involves preserving the natural hydrological conditions of the field or meadow.
