The Bermuda juniper (Juniperus bermudiana) is a perennial coniferous tree belonging to the Cupressaceae family. It is an endemic species to the Bermuda islands, where it historically served as the dominant forest-forming plant, playing a vital role in the local ecosystem stability and biodiversity.
Botanically, the species presents as a tree capable of growing up to 15 meters in height. The foliage exhibits heterophylly, characterized by needle-like leaves on young saplings and scale-like leaves on mature specimens. The species has specific climate and soil requirements. It thrives in warm, humid oceanic conditions and requires well-drained, limestone-based, or sandy soils. It is highly resistant to salt spray, making it suitable for coastal environments, but it shows very low tolerance for extreme temperature fluctuations and frost.
The agrotechnical management of this culture focuses on maintaining proper soil drainage to prevent root rot. Propagation is typically achieved through seeds, requiring careful stratification.
