Description
Syrian juniper (lat. Juniperus drupacea) is a distinctive species of evergreen tree within the Cupressaceae family. It is recognized as one of the largest species in the genus, often reaching heights of 25 meters, distinguishing itself from the prostrate or shrub-like habits typical of many other juniper species.
The native range of this tree is concentrated in the Eastern Mediterranean, including Turkey, Greece, Syria, and Lebanon. It primarily populates mountainous regions, thriving in rocky soils and limestone terrains where it forms distinctive woodland stands, demonstrating high tolerance for impoverished, stony earth.
Botanically, the species is unique due to its large, drupe-like cones that contain multiple seeds, which explains its common name. The leaves are needle-like, rigid, and arranged in whorls of three. The canopy generally develops a conical or pyramidal shape, maintaining a dense, deep green foliage throughout the year.
From an agronomical perspective, this crop requires excellent drainage, as root rot is a major risk in waterlogged soils. It is highly photophilous, preferring full sunlight to maintain its structural integrity and health. Propagation is typically performed via seeds, which require stratification to overcome the hard seed coat and ensure germination.
