Bog-laurel

Bog-laurel (Kalmia polifolia) is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. Known for its distinct, cup-shaped flowers and attractive foliage, this plant is highly prized in horticultural circles for adding texture and colour to specialized acid-soil garden landscapes.

The plant is native to the northern regions of North America, primarily thriving in bogs, fens, and damp coniferous forest edges. Its evolutionary adaptation to these cool, moist, and acidic environments defines its specific physiological requirements in a garden setting.

Botanically, the species is characterized by its compact habit and leather-like, lanceolate leaves that feature a pale, glaucous underside. The flowers, appearing in spring, form striking clusters of pink to rose-purple blooms, each with unique mechanical stamens that release pollen when disturbed by pollinators.

Successful cultivation requires strict adherence to soil parameters; the plant will not survive in neutral or alkaline conditions. A pH range of 4.5 to 5.5 is necessary, along with a consistently moist but well-drained substrate, typically rich in organic matter like peat moss or decomposed coniferous needles.

In landscaping, Bog-laurel is utilized for its ornamental value in rock gardens, along pond margins, or as part of a dedicated ericaceous border. It requires minimal pruning, which should only be performed immediately after flowering to maintain a dense, bushy form. Gardeners should note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.
