Kalm's St. John's-wort

Kalm's St. John's-wort (Hypericum kalmianum) is a perennial semi-evergreen shrub belonging to the Hypericaceae family. This ornamental plant is highly valued by horticulturists for its dense, rounded habit and vibrant, sun-like yellow flowers that brighten up garden borders during mid-to-late summer.

Native to North America, specifically around the Great Lakes region, this species naturally thrives in rocky outcrops, limestone crevices, and sandy habitats. Its evolutionary history has made it remarkably adaptable to various soil pH levels, provided the drainage is excellent, which is a critical factor for long-term health in cultivated environments.

Botanically, the plant features narrow, linear, bluish-green foliage that adds aesthetic value even when the plant is not in bloom. Its distinct flowers consist of five petals and numerous stamens, creating a clustered, star-like appearance. The fruit develops as a small, dry capsule that persists on the stems through the early winter months.

Agricultural and horticultural requirements center on full sun to partial shade exposure and consistently well-drained soil. It is exceptionally hardy, capable of withstanding cold winters, although it benefits from mulching in northern latitudes to protect the root zone. Watering should be deep but infrequent once the plant is established, as it possesses decent drought tolerance.

The primary use of Kalm's St. John's-wort is in landscape architecture, where it serves as an excellent low-maintenance shrub for rock gardens, mass plantings, or foundations. While it is rarely bothered by serious pests, gardeners should watch for signs of leaf spot or rust in humid climates. Maintenance primarily involves minimal pruning after flowering to encourage dense branching for the following season.
