Description
Kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra) is a perennial bunchgrass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is one of the most widely distributed and ecologically significant grasses in the tropics and subtropics, valued primarily for its role as a high-quality forage plant for both livestock and native herbivores.
The native range of this species extends across vast areas of Africa, Asia, and Australia. It is highly adaptable to various ecological niches, typically thriving in savannas and grasslands. Its distribution is closely linked to its ability to survive in environments characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons, making it a critical component of regional pastoral systems.
Botanically, Kangaroo grass forms dense tussocks, with culms ranging from 30 to 150 cm in height. The foliage is narrow and linear, sometimes turning reddish-brown in color as the plant matures. Its inflorescence is a complex, drooping panicle protected by reddish, leaf-like spathes, which are a distinguishing feature of this species in its flowering phase.
In terms of cultivation, the plant is relatively undemanding but thrives best in well-drained soils with good exposure to sunlight. It exhibits significant drought tolerance, though its nutritional value peaks during the active growing season. Effective management requires rotational grazing, which prevents the build-up of old, unpalatable biomass and stimulates the production of fresh, protein-rich shoots.
