This crop is globally recognized as the primary source of kappa-carrageenan, a crucial commercial hydrocolloid widely utilized in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic sectors for its stabilizing and thickening properties.
Native to the warm, tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including the Philippines and Indonesia, this species has been extensively cultivated in similar tropical climates across the globe. Its ability to adapt to artificial growth conditions on floating farms has turned it into a cornerstone of the coastal blue economy.
Botanically, it features a complex thallus structure with varying degrees of branching. The seaweed is typically cultivated using vegetative propagation, where small cuttings are tied to ropes or installed on off-bottom monoline or net systems, ensuring that the organism receives sufficient sunlight and nutrient-rich water flow.
The cultivation of this species demands specific environmental parameters, including high light intensity, steady water temperatures between 25°C and 30°C, and moderate salinity levels. Successful husbandry requires intensive manual labor, involving regular removal of epiphytes and adjustments of the farm structure to maintain optimal biomass density.
The most devastating condition affecting the crop is the "ice-ice" syndrome, which causes thallus bleaching and tissue disintegration, often triggered by environmental stress such as abnormal salinity drops or high temperature spikes. Additionally, farmers must manage various pests, including herbivorous fish and invertebrates, which can cause significant damage to the plantations if left uncontrolled.
