Description
Kepel (Stelechocarpus burahol) is a unique evergreen fruit tree belonging to the Annonaceae family. It is botanically famous for its cauliflory, a phenomenon where both flowers and fruits sprout directly from the main trunk. Historically significant in Indonesia, the fruit was once held in high regard by royalty for its unique scent and taste, which is described as a mixture of mango and papaya.
Native to the humid tropical forests of Indonesia, specifically Java, the Kepel tree thrives in equatorial climates. It prefers regions with consistent high temperatures and significant annual rainfall. In its natural habitat, the tree can reach heights of up to 25 meters, though domesticated varieties are often pruned to maintain a more manageable size for harvesting and maintenance.
The botanical structure of the tree includes leathery, elliptical leaves and a dense, dark green canopy. The flowers are small, fragrant, and develop in clusters along the trunk. The fruit itself is brown-skinned with a yellowish, pulpy interior. The seeds are relatively large, and it is crucial to plant them immediately after harvest, as they rapidly lose viability when stored.
Cultivation requires fertile, deep, and well-draining soil with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to neutral. Kepel is not drought-tolerant, so consistent irrigation is essential, especially during the establishment phase. The tree is a slow grower, making it a long-term investment for growers. Protecting young plants from direct, intense sunlight and strong wind is recommended during their initial growth stages.
