Kohleria (lat. Kohleria hybrids) is a perennial herbaceous plant or subshrub belonging to the large Gesneriaceae family. In modern horticulture, hybrid forms are the most common, developed through cross-breeding to achieve more vibrant floral colors, unique petal spotting patterns, and compact, manageable growth habits for container cultivation.

The origin of wild Kohleria species is rooted in the tropical regions of Central and South America, specifically the high-altitude forests of Colombia, Mexico, and Panama. As a cultivated crop, it is strictly categorized as an ornamental plant utilized in indoor floriculture, residential interior landscaping, and specialty greenhouse production.

Botanically, these plants are defined by their hairy, pubescent foliage and stems, which give them a velvety texture. The flowers are distinctively bell-shaped with a wide, spotted throat. A key biological characteristic is the production of scaly rhizomes, which function as storage organs and enable the plant to undergo a dormancy period, a critical phase for its long-term development.

Agrotechnical requirements focus on providing bright, indirect light to prevent leaf scorching and maintaining a stable temperature range between 20°C and 25°C. The growing medium must be highly porous, well-draining, and slightly acidic. Proper irrigation management is essential: the soil should remain moist but never waterlogged, as stagnant water is the primary cause of rhizome decay.

The primary economic use is the decorative trade, where Kohleria is valued for its continuous blooming potential throughout the season. To ensure optimal productivity and plant health, growers must monitor for common threats which include:

  • Mealybugs, which tend to congregate in leaf axils.
  • Spider mites, commonly found during periods of low environmental humidity.
  • Root rot, typically resulting from improper substrate drainage or over-watering.
  • Powdery mildew, appearing on foliage due to poor ventilation and fluctuating temperatures.
