Description
Koompassia malaccensis is a massive tropical tree species belonging to the Fabaceae family. Recognized as one of the tallest trees in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, it plays a vital role in maintaining the canopy structure and providing essential ecological services to its native habitat.
The native range of this species spans across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. It thrives primarily in lowland tropical forests, often favoring alluvial plains and peat swamp forest areas. The species is highly dependent on consistent, high-intensity rainfall and tropical temperatures, making it unable to survive in cooler or temperate climate zones.
Botanically, the tree is characterized by its imposing stature, reaching heights of up to 60 meters with a substantial, straight trunk supported by prominent buttress roots. In the timber industry, the wood of this tree is widely known as Kempas. It is celebrated for its exceptional hardness, high density, and distinctive reddish-brown color. Common industrial applications include heavy-duty flooring, railway sleepers, garden furniture, and structural timber for framing.
