Dissected lettuce (Latin: Lactuca dissecta) is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. While not as widespread in commercial agriculture as common garden lettuce, this species is highly valued by botanists and specialized growers for its unique morphological characteristics and nutritional potential in sustainable farming systems.

The plant is native to the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia, including the Himalayan range. It is naturally adapted to high-altitude environments characterized by cool climates, high levels of solar radiation, and well-drained rocky or loamy soils. In cultivation, these native environmental preferences dictate the need for cool-season management to maximize yield quality.

The main botanical feature of this species is its highly dissected or lobed leaf margins, which give the plant its characteristic name. The leaves typically form a dense basal rosette before the plant initiates bolting and produces elongated, branching flowering stems. The flowers are generally small, yellow to whitish-yellow inflorescences, followed by achenes equipped with a pappus, facilitating wind dispersal.

Agronomic management requires fertile, loose, and well-aerated soil with consistent moisture levels. The crop performs best when grown in moderate temperatures, as extreme summer heat triggers premature bolting, which negatively affects leaf flavor and texture. Proper spacing is essential to ensure adequate air circulation around the rosettes, which helps in preventing excessive humidity buildup near the soil surface.

In terms of agricultural use, the plant is primarily harvested for its young leaves, which can be used in salads or as a cooked leafy green. Producers should remain vigilant regarding standard lettuce pests and diseases, particularly in intensive farming setups:
