The native habitat of this species is limited to subalpine forests at elevations ranging between 2300 and 3500 meters. Due to its origin in high-altitude environments, the tree thrives in cool, humid conditions with stable moisture levels throughout the growing season. It is generally not suited for regions with hot, arid summers, where heat stress can severely impede its development.
Botanically, Masters larch is characterized by its deciduous needles that turn vibrant colors before falling in autumn. The tree typically maintains a slender, conical form. Its cones are relatively small and feature distinctive reflexed bract scales, which are a key diagnostic feature for distinguishing it from other larch species native to the Asian region.
