The native distribution of this plant includes tropical and subtropical regions across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. It is typically found in riparian zones, marshlands, and areas with consistently high soil moisture, reflecting its evolutionary adaptation to fluctuating water levels.
Botanically, the plant features elongated stems that branch frequently, covered in small, serrated, opposite leaves. These leaves can change morphology depending on the growth medium, often appearing more delicate when submerged compared to their emersed form, which tends to be sturdier and more pigmented.
