Tree Lavatera

Lavatera olbia, commonly known as the tree lavatera, is a robust perennial shrub belonging to the Malvaceae family. This species is highly valued in horticulture for its rapid growth, architectural form, and an abundance of vibrant flowers that bloom continuously from early summer until the first frosts.

Originating from the Mediterranean region, particularly coastal areas, this plant is well-adapted to maritime climates. While it thrives in regions with mild winters, it is often grown as an annual or a protected perennial in colder zones where temperatures drop significantly below freezing during the winter months.

Botanically, the plant can reach impressive heights of 1.5 to 2.5 meters. It features lobed, grey-green leaves that are covered in fine, soft hairs. The flowers are typically trumpet-shaped, blooming in various shades of pink or violet, and are positioned along the upper stems, which provides a long-lasting display of color throughout the active growing season.

Successful cultivation of Lavatera olbia requires a location with full sun and protection from strong, cold winds. The plant is not particularly demanding regarding soil quality, provided that the growing medium is well-drained. It performs exceptionally well in poor to moderately fertile sandy soils, where it can develop a strong root system without excessive lush growth.

Standard agronomic practices include pruning back the growth by at least one-third in the spring to promote bushiness and maintain an attractive habit. While the plant is relatively resilient, it can be susceptible to rust infections on its foliage and occasional attacks from aphids during periods of high humidity. Regular inspection and moderate irrigation are sufficient to keep the plant healthy.
