Sand myrtle (Leiophyllum buxifolium) is a unique evergreen shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. Known for its slow growth and dense habit, it is highly prized in horticultural circles for its aesthetic appeal. Despite its common name, it is not a true myrtle but rather a cousin of the rhododendron and heather, sharing many of their cultural requirements.
Native to the eastern United States, specifically the coastal plains and mountainous regions from New Jersey to Florida, this plant thrives in specialized ecological niches. It naturally prefers sandy, infertile, and acidic soils. Understanding its origin is key to successful cultivation, as the plant demands specific environmental conditions to maintain its health and vigor over time.
Botanically, this shrub is characterized by small, leathery, dark green leaves that are densely packed along the stems. The plant usually reaches a height of 1–2 feet.
