Large-flowered motherwort (Leonurus macranthus) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is highly regarded in the pharmaceutical industry due to its dense concentration of bioactive compounds, such as alkaloids and flavonoids, which contribute to its effectiveness as a natural sedative and cardiovascular aid.
Originating from East Asia, this crop is naturally distributed across Russia’s Far East, China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. In an agricultural context, it is known for its remarkable adaptability to various temperate climates. It thrives in open, sunny locations and is often cultivated on lands that are otherwise unsuitable for more delicate row crops.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a sturdy, upright stem reaching heights of 120–150 cm, adorned with deeply lobed, palmately divided leaves. The most striking feature is its large pink-to-purple flowers, arranged in dense whorls along the upper portion of the stem. This specific morphology distinguishes it from other common motherwort species, making it easier for harvesters to identify in the field.
For successful cultivation, Leonurus macranthus requires fertile, well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. While the plant is drought-tolerant once established, providing consistent moisture during the early spring vegetative stage significantly boosts biomass yield. It is a perennial crop that can maintain productivity for several years, though soil enrichment via organic fertilizers is recommended to sustain high nutrient output.
The economic value of this crop is primarily driven by its medicinal usage, where the aerial parts (stems and leaves) are harvested at the peak of flowering. Beyond pharmacology, it serves as an excellent honey plant, beneficial for biodiversity and apiculture. Major threats include pests like leaf beetles and powdery mildew; maintaining optimal plant spacing and ensuring good airflow within the fields are the most effective preventive measures.
