Scaly sword-sedge (Lepidosperma squamatum Labill.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. It is a rhizomatous sedge known for its tough, resilient growth habit, which allows it to thrive in nutrient-poor environments where other vegetation often fails to establish a foothold.
Native to Australia, this species is widely distributed across southern and south-western regions of the continent. It typically inhabits scrublands, heathlands, and sandy coastal regions. Its natural habitat is characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations and intermittent water availability, forcing the plant to evolve specialized physiological mechanisms for resource conservation.
Botanically, Lepidosperma squamatum is recognized by its stiff, glaucous, sword-like leaves that emerge from a dense base. The inflorescences are distinct, appearing as rigid spikes covered in small, scale-like bracts, which is the primary identifier for the species. The root system is deep and fibrous, making the plant highly efficient at anchoring itself in loose, shifting soils.
Agronomic requirements for this culture are specific: it mandates well-drained, sandy soils and full sun exposure. In cultivation, avoiding waterlogging is the most critical factor for success, as poor drainage is the primary cause of root degradation. Given its natural adaptation, the plant requires very little additional fertilization and maintains its structural integrity even in harsh, high-wind conditions.

It is an excellent candidate for drought-tolerant gardens and coastal reclamation projects. While it is generally robust, growers should monitor for root pathogens triggered by excessive moisture and occasional infestation by sap-sucking insects, although the plant typically shows strong natural resistance.
