Rock Leptospermum

Rock Leptospermum (Leptospermum rupestre) is a hardy, evergreen, low-growing shrub that belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is a slow-growing plant that is highly regarded for its structural form and its ability to withstand challenging environmental conditions in alpine settings.

The species is endemic to Tasmania, where it is found in sub-alpine regions and rocky outcrops. Because of its native environment, the plant has evolved to be extremely resilient, thriving in exposed areas where other plants might struggle. This makes it a popular choice for rock gardens and modern xeriscaping.

Botanically, it is characterized by small, dense, leathery foliage that provides a refined texture. During the late spring and summer months, the shrub produces a prolific display of small, five-petaled white flowers that cover the branches, creating a striking appearance that masks the dense foliage beneath.

For successful cultivation, rock leptospermum requires well-draining soil and a sunny position. It prefers slightly acidic conditions and is sensitive to heavy, waterlogged soils which can lead to root rot. If planting in regions with heavy clay, amending the soil with grit or sand is essential for long-term survival.

In terms of maintenance, pruning is recommended after flowering to keep the shrub in a dense and compact shape. While generally resistant to many common pests, growers should keep an eye out for scale insects or spider mites, particularly when grown in glasshouses or containers. Regular, careful monitoring ensures that the plant remains healthy throughout the growing season.
