The plant is native to Chile, specifically inhabiting arid and semi-arid regions. Its survival strategy involves a specialized vegetative cycle, where growth is triggered by winter rains, followed by a mandatory dormancy period during the hot and dry summer months to prevent moisture loss from the bulb.
