Rocket pincushion

Rocket pincushion (Leucospermum reflexum) is an evergreen ornamental shrub belonging to the Proteaceae family. It is highly valued in commercial floriculture for its striking, brush-like inflorescences that provide a unique aesthetic in professional flower arrangements.

Native to the Western Cape region of South Africa, this species thrives in mountainous, sandy, and nutrient-poor soils. Commercially, it is cultivated in regions with a Mediterranean climate, as the plant is sensitive to frost and extreme cold. It requires expansive, sun-drenched locations to stimulate healthy flowering cycles.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by leathery, silvery-green leaves and a dense, shrubby growth habit. The flowers are arranged in large heads that transition from orange to vibrant red. The plant possesses specialized proteoid roots, which are highly efficient at nutrient uptake in depleted soils but are also very sensitive to environmental imbalances.

Successful cultivation requires soil with a low pH (5.0–6.0) and excellent drainage capabilities. One of the most critical aspects of its care is the avoidance of phosphorus-rich fertilizers, which can be toxic to its root system. Growers must maintain moderate moisture levels while preventing waterlogging, which often leads to root rot pathogens.

The primary economic use for Leucospermum reflexum is as a premium cut flower for the floral industry. Its durability, long vase life, and exotic appearance make it a staple in high-end arrangements. In suitable climates, it is also utilized in xeriscaping and as an ornamental shrub in Mediterranean-style gardens.
