Unlike conventional cacti that have lost their foliage, this species retains fully developed, fleshy leaves, representing an evolutionary link between typical cacti and woody shrubs. Its unique morphology allows it to thrive in tropical forest environments.

The plant originates from the tropical regions of Central and South America, particularly Panama and Colombia. Today, it is widely cultivated in Southeast Asia, where it is valued both as an ornamental plant and a food source. In these regions, it is often grown in home gardens or small-scale farms, adapted for its nutritional properties and use in local culinary traditions.

Botanically, the plant presents as a shrub or small tree, reaching heights of up to 5 meters. It features glossy, oblong leaves and striking orange-red flowers.
