Indian privet

Indian privet (Ligustrum indicum) is a perennial, evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub that belongs to the Olive family (Oleaceae). Known for its dense foliage and vigorous growth habit, this plant is a popular choice for ornamental gardening. It maintains its structural integrity throughout the seasons, making it a reliable element in garden design.

The native range of this species is centered in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, specifically the Himalayan foothills. Historically, it has adapted to humid environments with mild temperature fluctuations. Its natural distribution suggests a preference for fertile, moist soils found in forest margins, where it thrives as an understory species.

Botanically, Ligustrum indicum features leathery, opposite-arranged leaves and panicles of small, fragrant white or creamy flowers that bloom in the summer. Following the flowering period, the plant produces clusters of small, black drupe-like fruits. These berries are characteristic of the genus and provide a distinct visual appeal during the late season.

Agrotechnical requirements include full sun to partial shade exposure and well-drained, moderately moist soil.
