Aeschynanthus radicans, commonly known as the lipstick plant, is a perennial flowering species belonging to the family Gesneriaceae. This plant is a tropical epiphyte that naturally thrives in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, where it grows attached to tree branches. It is widely cultivated globally as a popular indoor ornamental plant, cherished for its trailing habit and vibrant, tubular blooms.
The plant originates from regions including Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Its natural habitat dictates its physiological needs, which include high humidity, constant warmth, and filtered light. Because it does not tolerate freezing temperatures, it is almost exclusively grown in climate-controlled greenhouses, conservatories, or as a classic indoor plant in temperate regions around the world.
Botanically, it is characterized by succulent, dark green, ovate leaves arranged in opposite pairs along trailing stems that can extend significantly. The most distinctive feature is its red tubular flower, which emerges from a dark-colored calyx, creating an appearance reminiscent of a tube of lipstick—hence its common name. The plant requires specialized care to bloom effectively under indoor conditions.
Agricultural requirements for successful cultivation include a loose, well-draining substrate typically composed of peat moss, pine bark, and perlite. Proper irrigation involves keeping the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged, as stagnant water can quickly lead to root rot. Additionally, maintaining ambient humidity levels above 60% is essential for the health of the foliage and optimal flower production.
The lipstick plant is susceptible to common greenhouse pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids, which can infest the underside of the leaves. Disease pressure is usually related to environmental stress, particularly fungal infections like grey mold or root rot caused by poor air circulation and excessive moisture. Regular monitoring and appropriate fungicide or insecticide applications are standard practices in commercial production.
