The origin of litchi traces back to Southern China, where it has been cultivated for over a millennium. Today, the main production regions include South-East Asia, India, Australia, and parts of the United States, specifically Florida, where the climate supports the physiological needs of the tree.

Botanically, the litchi tree is a slow-growing, long-lived perennial that can reach heights of 10 to 30 meters. It features pinnate, glossy, dark green leaves and produces panicles of small, yellowish-green flowers. The fruit develops in clusters, typically reaching maturity a few months after flowering.

Litchi thrives in tropical and subtropical climates that feature a distinct, cool, and dry season, which is essential to trigger floral induction. The trees require deep, well-draining, acidic soils rich in organic matter, as they are sensitive to both waterlogging and saline soil conditions.
