Lockhartia oerstedii is a unique epiphytic plant belonging to the family Orchidaceae. Unlike many common decorative crops, this orchid is highly prized for its unusual vegetative habit, resembling a braided ribbon or plait, with triangular leaves arranged densely in two opposing rows along the stem.

The plant originates from the humid tropical forests of Central America, with a native range extending from Mexico to Colombia. In the wild, these orchids lead an epiphytic lifestyle, anchoring themselves to tree trunks and branches where they benefit from filtered light and moisture derived directly from tropical precipitation.

Botanically, the species is characterized by the absence of prominent pseudobulbs, which necessitates careful attention to moisture levels. The flowers are small, primarily yellow, and often feature brown or reddish spots on the labellum; they emerge from the leaf axils in short clusters. Flowering cycles can be varied, provided that light and temperature levels remain stable throughout the year.

Successful agronomy requires maintaining high ambient humidity (above 60%) and ensuring excellent aeration for the root system. The planting medium must be specialized for epiphytes, typically consisting of fine pine bark, charcoal, and sphagnum moss. Watering should be conducted only as the substrate approaches dryness, preventing waterlogging, as the roots are highly susceptible to fungal rot.
