Lophophora diffusa is a slow-growing succulent species belonging to the Cactaceae family. It is recognized for its globular body, which often lacks the distinct ribs found in other species, and its yellowish-green skin. As an ornamental plant, it is highly valued by horticulturists and cactus collectors worldwide for its unique, unconventional appearance.

This species is endemic to restricted regions in central Mexico, particularly in the states of Querétaro and Guanajuato. In its natural habitat, it thrives in arid environments characterized by limestone substrates and seasonal precipitation, often seeking protection from intense sunlight under larger desert shrubs or within rock crevices.

Successful cultivation requires mimicking the natural conditions of its habitat. The most critical factor is the selection of an appropriate substrate, which must be highly porous and mineral-based to ensure rapid drainage. A mixture containing pumice, coarse sand, and a minimal amount of organic matter is generally recommended by agronomists.

The plant demands a strict watering regime. During the growing season, it should be watered sparingly only after the substrate has completely dried out. During the winter dormancy period, the plant requires cool, dry conditions with temperatures around 10–15°C to prepare for the subsequent growing cycle and to prevent physiological stress.

Common phytosanitary issues involve fungal infections if humidity is too high or if drainage is insufficient. Pests such as root mealybugs require careful monitoring. Despite its slow growth rate, the plant is relatively resilient if maintained in a stable environment with adequate light and proper air circulation.
