Seedbox (Ludwigia alternifolia) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Onagraceae family. Unlike its smaller aquatic relatives frequently used in aquascaping, this species is a robust wetland plant, characterized by its upright growth habit and significant size, often used in large-scale landscaping and environmental restoration projects.

The plant originates from North America, primarily inhabiting wet meadows, swamps, and shorelines across the eastern and central regions of the United States. Its ability to thrive in water-saturated soils makes it an excellent candidate for agricultural land management in areas that are otherwise unsuitable for traditional crop cultivation due to excessive moisture.

Botanically, Ludwigia alternifolia is distinguished by its alternate leaves and distinctive yellow, four-petaled flowers. The common name "seedbox" is derived from its unique, box-like, cube-shaped seed capsules that persist long after the petals have fallen. The plant’s root system is adapted to anaerobic soil conditions, which allows it to maintain structural integrity in mud and silt.

Regarding agricultural requirements, the crop demands high light intensity to prevent etiolation. It performs best in soils with a pH ranging from 5.5 to 7.0. Regular hydration is the most critical factor; the root crown should be consistently moist or submerged. While it is hardy in many zones, it is sensitive to severe frost, requiring seasonal protection in colder climates to ensure the survival of the rhizome.

Economic and environmental applications include its role in phytoremediation, where it serves to sequester excess nutrients from agricultural runoff, thereby improving water quality. Maintenance must focus on pest management, particularly monitoring for aphids during the flowering stage and preventing fungal infections that flourish in stagnant, humid air conditions. When managed correctly, it provides both ecological benefits and aesthetic value to wetland landscapes.
