The ancestral species originate from diverse tropical and subtropical wetlands across the Americas. While their natural habitats include marshy banks and shallow rivers, modern agricultural production of these hybrids takes place primarily in specialized nurseries and greenhouse facilities, focusing on hydroponic propagation techniques to ensure disease-free and vigorous stocks.

Botanically, these hybrids exhibit a characteristic herbaceous structure with alternate or opposite leaf arrangements. Depending on the specific hybrid, leaves can be lanceolate or orbicular. A hallmark feature is their phenotypic plasticity; the plant's coloration, ranging from emerald green to deep red, is heavily influenced by spectral light composition, mineral concentrations in the substrate, and iron availability.
