Ludwigia ovalis is a perennial herbaceous aquatic plant belonging to the family Onagraceae. It is widely recognized in the horticultural and aquarium trade for its elegant foliage and vibrant color variations, which respond dynamically to environmental stimuli.

The native distribution of this species spans across East Asia, including Japan, Korea, and parts of China. It naturally thrives in wetland environments, such as shallow ponds, riverbanks, and marshy areas, where it can easily transition between submerged and emersed growth habits.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its distinctively rounded or oval leaves, which are arranged in opposite pairs along the stem. The coloration of the foliage, ranging from bright emerald to deep burgundy, is a key morphological feature that is highly dependent on light intensity and nutrient availability in the substrate.

Optimal cultivation requires a nutrient-rich substrate and stable water conditions with temperatures typically between 20°C and 28°C. The species demands high light intensity to maintain its characteristic reddish hue. Propagation is generally performed through stem cuttings, which easily develop adventitious roots when planted in a fertile, slightly acidic medium.
