Originating from the Mediterranean region, this liverwort has spread globally due to human activity, particularly through the transport of nursery plants. It thrives in humid, shaded environments and is frequently encountered in greenhouses, damp garden stone paths, and urban areas where environmental conditions mimic its natural rock-crevice habitat.

The morphology of this plant is defined by its flat, dichotomously branched thallus. The most prominent feature, serving as a diagnostic trait, is the crescent-shaped gemmae cups located on the dorsal surface of the thallus. These cups produce gemmae—asexual propagules that allow the species to propagate rapidly when displaced by rain or irrigation water.

For successful growth, Lunularia cruciata requires high ambient humidity and shade. It does not tolerate prolonged drought or intense direct sunlight, which causes desiccation of the thallus. In professional nursery environments, the plant is often managed by adjusting substrate drainage to prevent the chronic dampness that supports its establishment.

The economic value of this liverwort is primarily found in its use as an educational model in schools and universities and in the creation of moss gardens or terrariums. It is rarely affected by traditional agricultural pests, but it may become a nuisance in nurseries where its fast growth can outcompete small seedlings if the humidity is not properly controlled.
