Ground cedar (Lycopodium complanatum) is a perennial evergreen clubmoss species within the Lycopodiaceae family. This ancient plant is well-known for its creeping rhizomes and flattened, fan-like horizontal branches that resemble miniature cedar needles, which gives the plant its common name.

The species is indigenous to the temperate and boreal forests of the Northern Hemisphere. It thrives in well-drained, acidic forest soils, typically under pine or mixed forest canopies. Its natural range encompasses broad regions across Eurasia and North America, where it prefers stable, undisturbed habitats.

From a botanical standpoint, the plant is characterized by a complex structure involving a main creeping stem and erect aerial branches. The microphyllous leaves are tiny and appressed to the stem. The production of spores occurs in terminal strobili, which are elevated on peduncles, ensuring efficient wind dispersal of the fine yellow dust.

Regarding cultivation, ground cedar is exceptionally difficult to manage in conventional agricultural settings. Its obligate symbiosis with specific soil fungi (mycorrhiza) makes it dependent on the integrity of the natural soil profile. Consequently, there is no large-scale commercial cultivation; conservation and careful wild-harvesting are the primary methods of interaction.

The economic value of this plant is centered on its spores, widely known as lycopodium powder. Historically and currently, these spores are utilized in the pharmaceutical industry as a pill coating or a drying agent for skin conditions. Additionally, due to its hydrophobic nature and high ignition point, it has been used in metal casting and stage pyrotechnics.

Major threats to Lycopodium complanatum include habitat loss and environmental degradation. The plant is sensitive to soil disturbance and changes in local hydrological regimes. While it has few specialized pests, the species is highly vulnerable to invasive vegetation that alters the microclimate of the forest floor, potentially displacing it from its niche.
