Description

Osage orange (Maclura pomifera) is a deciduous tree belonging to the Moraceae family. Often referred to as "hedge apple" or "horse apple," the tree is widely recognized for its spherical, lime-green, bumpy fruits. Although these fruits are not edible for humans, they are highly valued for their complex biochemical composition.

Native to the south-central United States, the species has been introduced to various temperate regions worldwide. Due to its rugged nature, it is frequently used as a windbreak and in forestry projects. The tree thrives in diverse environments, displaying remarkable resilience to extreme heat, cold, and varying soil compositions.

Botanically, it is a dioecious tree featuring thorny branches and glossy, oval-shaped leaves. Its root system is exceptionally strong, making it an excellent plant for erosion control.
