The native habitat of this species is extremely limited, specifically restricted to parts of the Florida Panhandle in the United States. The flowers, typically appearing in late spring, feature purple-tinted bases on the petals. After flowering, the tree produces distinctive cone-like fruits that turn a vibrant, striking pink as they reach maturity in autumn.

Cultivation requires strict attention to soil and moisture conditions. This plant thrives in fertile, well-draining, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter. Gardeners must ensure consistent hydration, as the plant does not tolerate drought well, and the application of pine bark or leaf mold mulch is recommended to regulate soil temperature and retain humidity.

While primarily used in specialized ornamental landscaping and arboretums, it demands a site protected from high winds to prevent leaf damage. The tree is generally resilient, but growers should be vigilant against iron chlorosis if soil pH is too high, and monitor for common pests like scale insects, especially in poor air circulation conditions.
