Native to the mountains of Mexico, specifically in the states of Hidalgo and San Luis Potosi, this cactus thrives in limestone-rich soils at high altitudes. Its natural habitat is characterized by excellent drainage and exposure to bright, high-mountain sunlight, which has shaped its physiological requirements for cultivation in home or greenhouse environments.

Botanically, it forms small, spherical to cylindrical stems that tend to cluster heavily over time, creating impressive mounds. The flowers are typically white to yellowish-pink, blooming in a ring around the top of the stem.
