Maniltoa lenticellata

Maniltoa lenticellata is an evergreen tropical tree belonging to the Fabaceae (legume) family. Renowned for its structural beauty and characteristic foliage behavior, it is a significant species in tropical forestry and horticultural landscapes. It typically develops into a medium-sized tree with a dense, spreading crown that provides excellent canopy cover.

The species is native to regions of New Guinea and nearby islands in the Pacific. It thrives in humid tropical rainforest environments, where high rainfall and consistent temperatures dominate throughout the year. Cultivation outside its native range is restricted to tropical or controlled greenhouse environments, as the plant is highly sensitive to frost and chilling injury.

Botanically, the plant is distinguished by the presence of prominent lenticels on the bark, which facilitate gas exchange. One of the most striking visual features is its new flush of leaves, which emerge in stunning shades of bronze, copper, or red before maturing into a deep, glossy green. This phenomenon makes it a highly sought-after specimen for ornamental purposes.

Optimal growth requires well-drained, acidic to neutral soil that is rich in organic matter. Agronomic management involves consistent irrigation to ensure the soil remains moist, as the tree does not handle prolonged drought well. Providing moderate shelter from strong, drying winds is recommended to preserve the integrity of its delicate young foliage.
