Stream bogmoss (Mayaca fluviatilis) is a delicate aquatic species belonging to the family Mayacaceae. Known for its feathery, light-green foliage, it is a highly sought-after plant for aquascaping, as it adds texture and soft coloration to freshwater setups, often resembling a dense mat of moss.
The native distribution of this plant stretches across the Americas, encompassing regions from the southeastern United States through Central America and down into Brazil and Argentina. It thrives in swampy areas, ponds, and slow-moving streams, where it grows submerged or partially emergent in soft, nutrient-rich substrates.
Botanically, Mayaca fluviatilis is defined by its simple, leafy stems. The leaves are spirally arranged and narrow, contributing to its "bogmoss" appearance. It does not possess a complex root system for nutrient uptake; instead, it relies heavily on absorbing minerals and carbon dioxide directly from the surrounding water column.
Cultivation requirements for this species are specific. It demands bright lighting and soft, slightly acidic water to maintain its vibrant green color. In harder water, growth becomes stunted and the leaves may turn brittle. Regular fertilizing, particularly with iron and CO2 injection, is essential to sustain healthy development and prevent yellowing of the stems.
