Meesia uliginosa, commonly referred to as the Meesia moss, belongs to the family Meesiaceae. While it does not serve as a commercial agricultural crop, it is a vital component of wetland and peatland ecosystems, contributing to soil structure and moisture retention in its natural habitat.
The species has a broad circumpolar distribution, primarily found in Arctic and temperate zones across the Northern Hemisphere. It typically thrives in calcareous fens, wet meadows, and sites where mineral-rich groundwater emerges, reflecting its high dependency on specific environmental chemistry.
Botanically, this moss forms loose or dense tufts with individual shoots that are relatively small. A distinct characteristic is its elongated sporophyte stalk, which supports the spore-bearing capsule high above the green foliage. The leaves are typically lanceolate and appressed, adapting the plant to survive in periodically saturated conditions.
Regarding ecological requirements, Meesia uliginosa is highly sensitive to soil pH and hydrology. It requires neutral to slightly alkaline substrates and cannot withstand soil acidification or extensive drying. It acts as a bioindicator for high-quality, undisturbed wetland sites, making it important for conservation management.
Potential threats include land drainage, agricultural runoff, and water pollution, which degrade the fragile fen ecosystems. There are no known agricultural pests or diseases that target this species in the way they do commercial crops; however, competitive growth from vascular plants due to eutrophication can lead to the displacement of moss colonies.
