Woolly mercury (scientific name: Mercurialis tomentosa) is a hardy perennial herb belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. It is distinctively characterized by a dense, whitish tomentose (woolly) covering on its stems and leaves, which acts as a protective layer against excessive transpiration in hot and dry climates.
The native habitat of this species is primarily the Mediterranean basin, stretching across southern Europe and North Africa. It is commonly found in rocky substrates, arid pastures, and disturbed stony slopes. The plant is well-adapted to environments where nutrient availability is low and seasonal water scarcity is a significant constraint for other plant species.
Morphologically, the plant presents as a subshrub with opposite leaves and a strictly dioecious flowering system. This means that individual plants produce either male or female flowers, necessitating a nearby presence of both sexes for cross-pollination and successful seed production, which is a critical factor for its propagation in natural and cultivated environments.
In terms of agricultural and cultivation requirements, Mercurialis tomentosa thrives in well-drained, porous soils. It is highly intolerant of waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root system decay.
