Metrosideros polymorpha

Metrosideros polymorpha, commonly referred to as the 'ohia lehua' tree, belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is the most abundant native tree species in the Hawaiian Islands. Its name, 'polymorpha', refers to the significant morphological variation displayed by the plant, which allows it to thrive in diverse environments ranging from tropical rainforests to subalpine lava flows.

Originating from Hawaii, this species is a cornerstone of the island's watershed ecology. It serves as a primary colonizer on new lava flows and provides critical habitats for endemic biodiversity. The tree is recognized for its ecological resilience, playing a vital role in capturing moisture from fog and maintaining ground water levels.

Botanically, the species ranges from stunted shrubs to large trees up to 25 meters tall. The leaves are remarkably variable in size, shape, and thickness to cope with different humidity levels and light exposure. Its iconic flowers, consisting of dense clusters of red stamens, are primarily adapted for pollination by native nectar-feeding birds.

For successful cultivation, Metrosideros polymorpha requires excellent drainage and a substrate similar to volcanic soil. It is intolerant of heavy, waterlogged conditions which promote root decay. In a landscape setting, it requires full sun exposure and careful monitoring of soil pH to ensure healthy development and prevent nutrient deficiencies.

In terms of use, it has historical significance for its dense, durable wood and its status as a sacred plant in Hawaiian culture. Today, its primary agricultural focus is environmental restoration and use as an ornamental specimen in tropical climates. Current horticultural practices are heavily focused on mitigating the impact of 'Rapid Ohia Death' (ROD), a lethal fungal disease caused by Ceratocystis species that poses a major threat to its survival.
