Early millet

Early millet (lat. Milium vernale) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. While not a primary cereal crop in terms of grain production, it serves as a valuable forage plant within natural grasslands and managed pasture systems, particularly in regions with distinct seasonal growth patterns.

The native range of this species spans from Southern Europe and the Mediterranean to the Caucasus and parts of Central Asia. It is naturally adapted to open, sun-drenched environments such as dry hillsides, meadows, and forest margins. Its ability to thrive in these varied conditions makes it a robust component of meadow vegetation.

Botanically, this species is characterized by its tufted growth habit and slender, linear leaves. As the name suggests, it is an early-maturing grass, reaching its peak vegetative stage significantly earlier than many other perennial species. Its root system is fibrous and efficient at absorbing moisture from the upper soil horizon, which is critical for its survival in spring.

Regarding cultivation, this grass thrives best in well-drained, light-textured soils that are rich in mineral nutrients. It has a high light requirement and is generally drought-tolerant, which allows it to persist in arid environments where other grasses might fail.
