Originating from the tropical regions of Central and South America, the species has naturalized throughout tropical and subtropical areas globally. Its rapid spread and ability to thrive in various soil types make it an important species in certain ecosystems, though it is often managed as a weed in agricultural landscapes where it competes for nutrients.

Botanically, the sensitive plant is famous for its rapid thigmonastic movements, where the leaflets fold inward when touched or exposed to heat. This mechanism is governed by the osmotic pressure within specialized cells called pulvini. The plant typically features pinnately compound leaves, stems with sharp prickles, and globe-shaped pinkish flower heads that bloom in the warmer months.

Successful cultivation requires tropical-like conditions, including high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. The plant thrives in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil and requires consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged. Due to its sensitivity to cold, it is strictly grown in greenhouses in temperate climates or maintained as a specialty greenhouse crop.
